What is conjunctivitis ? What are the Symptoms of conjunctivitis ? How to prevent the transmission of viral or bacterial conjunctivitis ?

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye, of viral, bacterial, allergic or irritative origin. It is expressed in particular by the redness of one or both eyes, associated with itching, tingling, a clear or purulent flow.

What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, a membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. The cornea is not reached.

Conjunctivitis is common and safe for vision in the absence of complications.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis combines various symptoms:

  • Redness of the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids (the white part of the eye is red);
  • An itching of the eyelids that may be swollen (palpebral edema);
  • A feeling of discomfort, tingling or irritation in the eye leading the person to rub his or her eyes;
  • A clear and limpid flow of the eye or on the contrary thick and purulent;
  • Eyelids glued in the morning to awakening;
  • an increased larmoierment;
  • Blurred vision or discomfort in light but without a drop in visual acuity.

Do not confuse conjunctivitis and other ocular ailments that also manifest with a red eye
+An infectious keratitis: inflammation of the cornea which results in a decrease in vision, an intense discomfort with light, +intense pains. The keratitis should be treated quickly as it endangers the vision;
+A uveitis: Inflammation of the uveal manifested by eye pain, a decrease in vision and the printing of “flying flies”;
+Acute glaucoma: Elevation of the internal pressure of the eye, sometimes resulting in eye pain and a decrease in the visual field (e.g. loss of side vision). It needs to be treated quickly.
=> If in doubt, consult an ophthalmologist quickly

How to react in case of conjunctivitis?

In case of conjunctivitis, it is important to know how to react (should I consult or not? How soon?) and what good gestures to be relieved

Tips.
If you are suffering from conjunctivitis, you can apply the following actions to be relieved and prevent transmission.

Conjunctivitis: gestures to be relieved

  • If you are wearing lentils, remove them until healing. Only replace the lenses 24 hours after the end of the treatment. Use a new pair of lenses if they are disposable or disinfect them so that they are not re-contaminated by the germ.
  • Wash the eye or both: clean them abundantly with saline and wipe them with a disposable handkerchief or sterile compress several times a day.
  • If your eyes are glued in the morning, you can use a compress soaked in lukewarm water to take off your eyelashes.
  • If you have allergic conjunctivitis, try not to get in contact with the allergen. You can use anti-allergic eye drops available without a prescription; Ask your pharmacist for advice.
  • If you have irritation conjunctivitis, avoid contact with the irritating product.

Preventing the transmission of viral or bacterial conjunctivitis
It is recommended that you apply the following guidelines:

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes: You will only aggravate the inflammation. In addition, you may contaminate your surroundings through your hands carrying the virus or bacteria.
  • Wash your hands before and after touching your eyes.
  • It may be necessary to discard your eye makeup if it was used just before conjunctivitis. It may have been infected with a virus or bacteria if conjunctivitis is infectious. There is in this case a risk for you to be re-contaminated by the germ.
