Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread and diffuse pain, mainly muscular, associated with chronic fatigue and sleep disorders. However, the symptoms differ from one person to another. In addition, the climate, the time of day, the level of stress and physical activity are factors that influence the severity of the symptoms and their variability over time. Here are the main symptoms.
What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?
-Diffuse muscle aches accompanied by morning stiffness, and some specific places of the body painful to the touch (see diagram). The neck and shoulders are usually the first painful places, followed by the back, thorax, arms and legs.
In extreme situations, a simple touch or even a touch causes pain throughout the body (a phenomenon called allodynia). The pain can be accompanied by the impression that the painful areas are swollen.
-A constant pain, but aggravated by the efforts, the cold, the humidity, the emotions and the lack of sommeil.
-A light and non-restorative sleep, causing fatigue from waking up.
-Persistent fatigue (all day), present in 9 out of 10 cases. Rest does not allow it to disappear.
-These main symptoms can add less characteristic symptoms, but equally annoying.
-Headaches or severe migraines, possibly caused by muscular tensions at the neck and shoulders, and by a disturbance of the natural ways of controlling pain.
-Irritable bowel syndrome: diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain.
– Depression or anxiety (in about one third of people fibromyalgia).
-Concentration difficulties.
-An increase in the acuity of the senses, an increased sensitivity to odors, light, noise and temperature changes (in addition to sensitivity to touch).
-Numbness and tingling to the hands and feet.
-Painful menstruation and a marked premenstrual syndrome.
-Irritable Bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis).
