This man has literally seen red by taking too much Viagra!

American researchers have recently warned against overdose with respect to Viagra. Indeed, a man has been impacteded by vision disturbances at the color level, and this for months!

People taking Viagra naturally see the main interest. On the other hand, researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York (United States) conducted a recent study published in retinal cases in recent days, reporting an impressive clinical case.

Scientists have indeed explained the case of a 31-year-old man who took too large a dose of sildenafil citrate – the active ingredient of Viagra. The patient was affected by a large cellular dysfunction of the retina. So the man in question has literally seen red for months!

In addition to its presence in Viagra, sildenafil citrate is a drug classified in the category of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5). Thus, in addition to its prescription in the context of erectile dysfunction, the latter is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.

However, the Type 5 phosphodiesterase is responsible for degrading the cyclic monophosphate guanosine (cGMP), another molecule that causes blood influx into the penis. In contrast, sildenafil citrate also degrades a phosphodiesterase type 6 molecule (PDE6) which is found for its part in the photoreceptors of the retina! Frequent cases of Cyanopsie, that is, seeing all or almost in blue, have been described, but these have faded in about 24 hours.

As for the man who saw everything in red for months, he simply did not respect the prescribed doses – between 25 mg to 100 mg. The doctors felt that this person thought he could improve his sexual performance by abusing the drug.

The researchers understood what had happened using various technologies such as optimal coherence tomography (OCT), to see the Transtina-layer-by-layer details of the retinal. The adaptive Optics (AO), capable of highlighting the microscopic structures of the eye, was also used. Thus, a microscopic lesion was identified at the level of the retina cones. But these are the cells responsible for the color of our vision!
