The Cabbage Soup Diet: What is it?

The Cabbage Soup Diet is the most famous and oldest of calorie diets, but probably also the most restrictive! This regime seduces many followers by its enticing promise: a weight loss of 3 to 7 kilos in a week. But the cabbage soup diet induces such calorie restriction and such food imbalance that weight loss is rarely sustainable.

The Cabbage Soup Diet: the Principles
The Cabbage Soup Diet is a calorie diet, which lasts from 3 to 7 days and is followed by a one-week stabilization phase. There are several versions of this diet, but all include this basic principle: consuming a large amount of vegetable soup (among which we will always find cabbage) at every meal, including breakfast. This soup, which can be drunk at will, can also serve as a appetite suppressant in the event of a craving during the day.

During the diet, in addition to a bowl of cabbage soup at each meal, one gradually integrates fruits and vegetables and a little meat (beef, veal or poultry without skin).

On the beverages side, only tea, coffee (unsweetened) and water are allowed.

Soup recipe
On the menu morning, noon and evening? Cabbage of course! and cabbage in all its forms: white cabbage, green cabbage, Chinese cabbage, kale, kale, cauliflower, Brussels cabbage or red cabbage for example.

To prepare the soup, you will add, in addition to the cabbage, seasonal vegetables (pepper, tomato, celery, zucchini, cucumber, salad, green beans, spinach, carrot, etc.) boiled without fat, then simmered until they are tender. We can add garlic, parsley, onion but also spices and aromatics to vary the taste of the famous cabbage soup. The addition of fats is against it prohibited.

The vegetables, when cooked, will not be milled or mixed to optimize the satiating effect and increase satiety.

What about the cabbage soup diet?
If cabbage is a potent diuretic, it would also depend on some, a fat burning food that would allow to lose weight quickly and efficiently. However, at the risk of disappointing the followers of the cabbage soup, there is no food “burns fat”, and above all, the fat does not burn: it is used by the body to produce calories!

The benefits
The Cabbage Soup Diet is a simple to follow and particularly economical diet. Moreover, because of the preponderance of vegetables (but also fruit) in the menus, this diet has the advantage of being rich in fibres, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Finally, the cabbage, also helps to stimulate the intestinal transit, by its richness in fibre. A real boon for people whose transit is slowed down.

The risks
This type of diet, in addition to being particularly désociabilisant, is extremely restrictive: it is a very (too!) Calorie Diet (600 kcal per day on average). Ansi, the Cabbage soup diet necessarily induces risks of deficiency, including vitamins D and E, iron, selenium and magnesium. This often results in chronic fatigue, hypoglycemia, migraines and sometimes even nausea, drop in tension or discomfort. This calorie restriction can also cause frustration and nibbling, or even real eating disorders (e.g. binge eating or bulimia).

Significant fibre intake can also cause intestinal disorders (bloating, gases, intestinal pain). The Cabbage Soup Diet is also highly discouraged for people with fragile intestines and for people prone to colitis.

Thinning, if it is actually fast in the early days, is mostly a loss of lean mass (muscle) as fat mass (fats) due to low protein intake. Another important point: weight loss is followed by a quasi-systematic weight recovery, even when a stabilization phase is followed…

If it gives hope of significant and rapid weight loss, the cabbage Soup diet is a drastic and perfectly unbalanced diet that presents too great a risk to health.
